What is Pain Management?

At Laser Spine & Orthopedics®, our goal is to help you enjoy a pain-free life. We do that by providing our patients with innovative, individualized treatment plans based on their unique goals and lifestyle. Our team of back and spine specialists, as well as our interventional pain experts, are dedicated to high-quality care using cutting-edge technology and the most advanced breakthroughs in healthcare.

We offer many non-invasive pain care methods that can be great alternatives to minimally invasive surgery. These options are divided into two main categories – Diagnostic interventional procedures and therapeutic procedures. Our pain management specialists are experts when it comes to building the most effective road map to a pain-free life for each patient.

Diagnostic Interventional Procedures

Diagnostic interventions are designed to provide temporary relief from your pain while establishing the root cause. This ensures an accurate assessment and the most efficient treatment.

  • Pain Mapping: This advanced procedure pinpoints and then isolates the precise location of the pain in your neck or back, using X-ray technology and luminescent medication.
  • Medial Branch Blocks: An anesthetic injected into the medial nerves connected to a specific facet joint to determine which of the small joints between the vertebrae are causing your pain.
  • Selective Nerve Root Blocks: This injection utilizes an anesthetic and an anti-inflammatory steroid to diagnose where, exactly, the nerve root pain is originating and to locate the specific nerve that is compressed or irritated.
  • Discogram: A standard imaging test, the discogram evaluates the patient’s back pain and pinpoints which vertebral disc is causing the issues and discomfort.

Therapeutic Procedures

Implementation of one or a combination of several therapeutic procedures may be recommended to treat the underlying condition that is causing your pain.

  • Epidural Steroid Injections: This minimally invasive treatment is performed to relieve pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves in the lumbar, thoracic or cervical region of the back and neck.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation: A procedure that usually provides long-lasting pain relief, radiofrequency ablation uses an electrical current to heat the bothersome area of nerve tissue and decrease the pain signals sent from that location to your brain.
  • Non-Invasive Pain Procedure (NIPP™): Cleared by the F.D.A., NIPP™ generally requires about 10 – 12 treatments to reach the desired effectiveness of the procedure. This non-drug pain reliever is placed behind the ear and provides continuous stimulation to activate specific cranial nerves.
  • Spinal Cord Stimulation: This advanced procedure attaches an electrical current to the source of your pain, which blocks the brain from sensing the pain signals associated with that region.
  • Vertebroplasty/Kyphoplasty: An effective outpatient procedure that stabilizes the spine by fixing vertebral fractures by injecting bone cement into the cracked areas.

Upon your consultation with our pain management specialists, it may be determined that one of our minimally invasive surgical procedures may be the best option to alleviate your pain. Our Board-certified back and spine surgeons can perform a variety of advanced surgical interventions that typically offer less trauma to surrounding areas, less blood loss, less scarring and more rapid healing than traditional open surgery.
